National Education System Policy 2020


On Wednesday the government released the new education policy, India changes its education policy after 34 years. The cabinet has renamed the ministry of human resources and development (MHRD) as the Ministry of Education.



#For school
  • 5+3+3+4 curriculum to replace 10+2 format.
  •  5 Years of foundation education -: These 5 years cover 3 Years of pre-school and Class 1st and 2nd (Age 3 to 6).
  •  3 Years of preparatory -: These 3 years cover class 3rd to 5th (Age 8 to 11).
  •  3 Years of middle -: These 3 years cover class 6th to 8th (Age 11 to 14).
  •  4 Years of secondary schooling -: These 4 years cover class 9th to 12th (Age 14 to 18).

#For colleges
  • Common colleges entrance exam -: NTA national test agency to conduct a common college entrance exam twice a year.
  •  4 Years of Bachelor -: 4 years of a multi-disciplinary bachelor's program to be preferred, mid-term dropouts to be given credit with option to complete a degree after a break.
  • No affiliation -: Over the next 15 years colleges will be graded autonomy to give degrees, affiliation with universities to end, so would deemed university status.   
  • Fee cap (fees limit) -:  proposal to set a limit on the fee charged by private institutions of higher education.  


#The Biggest changes in School Education 
  • Board Exams will be low stakes and test actual Knowledge instead of rote learning.
  • Mother tongue to be a medium of instruction till 5th grade.
  • Report cards will be a comprehensive report on skills and capabilities instead of just marks and statements.
  • All separation between vocational and academic and curricular and extra-curricular will also be removed.
  •  Students to learn coding from the 6th class.
  • Flexibility to choose subjects across the stream, all subjects to be offered of two-level of proficiency. 

#Modifying higher education.
  • 50% of gross enrolment ratio by 2035.
  • Holistic and multidisciplinary Education-flexibility of subjects.
  • Multiple entry and exit.
  • Public investment in the education sector to reach 6% of GDP at the earliest.
  • MPhil to be discontinued.

#Expected outcome of NEP.
  • Universalization from ECCE to secondary education by 2030.
  • 100% GER in Pre-School to secondary level by 2030.
  • Teachers to be prepared for assessment reforms by 2023.
  • Common standards of learning in public and private schools.
  • Inclusive and equitable education system by 2030.
